Hale Ha Nandaghari Palana

Mowgli's song from our childhood, we all loved this one...

Sang Sang Bholanath

Sang Sang Bholanath lyrics; Lyricist:Mangesh Padgaonkar

Where have all these bholanath's gone? I saw one in Bandra few days back and remembered how my sisters and I used to dance to this song as little girls.
Bugubugubugubugubugu...

A little girl describes the birds that came to visit the new born baby boy and brought him small gifts.
Sparrow, parrot, pigeon and nightingale brought their gifts and placed them in a small basket, next to the baby. A crow however, arrived and flew away with the basket, much to the girl's bewilderment. Naughty crow!
I've noticed that crows have often been portrayed as those who fly away with others things. For most things that you don't want to give young children or take away from their hands, we just end up saying 'काउ घेउन गेला' :-)

Chalnitle Peeth Mhane

A young girl is distressed when the dough refuses to sift from the strainer. Other objects in the room like the stick, puri and broom as well as the monsoon breeze back the dough.

Eethe Eethe Bas Re Kau

One of the first nursery rhymes that we were all taught, I just love the way my baby enacts the song. The baby in the song invites a crow to sit with him so that he can feed him and give him some water. After the crow, the baby appeals to the peacock and the sparrow to sit besides him, have the food and flutter away happily.

Ad Gula Mud Gula

In this song Anjani, the mother of baby Hanuman, sings lovingly to him telling him that he is the cutest baby of all. She coos to her baby and pampers him with adoring words.

Lyrics of the song -

Ye Re Ye Re Pavsa

One of the first Marathi nursery rhymes that we all learn. The song in this video is slightly different from the easy one we know -

In this song, a young girl asks the rain if it is upset with her and begs it to come back again. She promises to enjoy the rains thoroughly once it starts pouring and hopes that her school would shut down if rain comes down heavily.

Gori Gori Paan Phoolan Sarkhi Chhan

Gori Gori Paan Lyrics

Eka Makdane Kadhlaya Dukaan

Imagine the state of affairs when a monkey starts his own shop... I know many monkeys who own shops, but this one I guess is too cute :-)

Mamachya Gavala Jauya

Mamachya Gavala Jauya Lyrics

Asava Sundar Chocolatecha Bangla - Marathi Children's Song

Asava Sunder Chocolatecha Bangla is about a little girl's fantasy about a bungalow made of chocolates and biscuits.... Hmmm....Yummy in my Tummy :-)

 Asava Sunder Chocolatecha Bangla Lyrics

Marathi Nursery Rhymes

I am no proponent of Marathi bana and no savior of Marathi manoos. This blog is only with the intention that my child and several other Marathi children around the world know the nursery rhymes that their parents as children.
As a child, I loved the simplicity of these nursery rhymes. Remember Sang Sang Bholanath, Ye Re Ye Re Pausa and Asava Sunder Chocolate Cha Bangla!
With due respect to the English nursery rhymes I learned in kindergarten, I think they were all so violent and destructive. I mean, why did the piggy on the railway have to break its bones or Humpty Dumpty fall down and break into pieces? Why did Jack have to break his crown and Georgie Porgie kiss the girls and make them cry?
The only violent song that I remember from my kitty of Marathi nursery rhymes is Chadi Lage Cham Cham. But that too, I guess, is from a Marathi movie and in context.

I hope all my Marathi speaking friends enjoy this blog. I'll try to make it a complete collection of the best nursery rhymes, children's songs with videos in Marathi. The videos embedded here are courtesy www.myPOPKORN.com

Believe me, this is a treasure trove for all Marathi lovers!
